ASHLEY RUBIS
Multidisciplinary Fine Artist
I’ve always been drawn to things that make me pause and feel a little deeper.
For many years, graphite was my voice. I loved the contrast between dark and light, and the soft yet textured glide of pencil on paper. In 2012, at age sixteen, I sold my first original pencil portrait, turning my passion into commissioned work. I had the privilege of creating portraits for people who trusted me to capture the essence of someone they loved.
As I stepped into adulthood, life eventually took me in a different direction. I moved from my hometown in the prairies of Alberta to the west coast and found a new home in Burnaby, British Columbia.
As a young adult, I built a career outside of fine art - in 2019, I opened my own cosmetic tattoo business, where I worked with hundreds of clients, and spent years developing a level of dedication and attention to detail that I never could have learned from art alone. Through this experience, I lived through seasons that changed the way I see authenticity, connection, and what it means to create something from my soul.
Today, I’m less interested in creating something simply because I know how to draw it. I want my work to make people feel; I want there to be something beneath the surface - whether it invites a deeper look, creates an emotion, or leaves you with a thought that lingers after you’ve walked away.
My years of working with graphite gave me a strong technical foundation; now, I'm interested in using that foundation to create something more personal. Something that isn’t simply a reproduction of what I see, but a reflection of what I feel and what I’ve experienced. Nature is a constant source of inspiration for me. I’m drawn to its stillness, its impossible perfection, and its ability to be both my home, yet the ultimate authority over humankind. My work explores beauty, seasons, moments in time, connection without words, and the contrast between light and darkness.
I want my paintings and drawings to feel thoughtful, intimate, and lasting - pieces that can live with someone for years and reveal something different each time they look at them. The most meaningful art doesn’t tell you what to think - but rather, it simply makes you feel a deep connection to what you see.
I want to create art that feels authentic rather than perfect.
